Victor Wainwright: “South End of a North Bound Mule”

I don’t think I’ve ever heard a song with this much stank and style. Victor Wainwright basically kicks the door in right off the bat. His voice has a great tonality in his softer moments, but the texture, the growl, grit, gravel of his impassioned performance is what I’m really here for.

Americana is all about attitude and feeling, and “South End of a North Bound Mule” has it in spades. The instrumentals are characters all their own, from the heavy Sax, bow-legged guitar, steady cowbell (More, please), and faint hint of electric organ, the song’s musical ensemble is engaging.

I have to take a moment and bring us back to Victor Wainwright’s voice. Its range and character is so wonderfully full. He cuts loose here and there, giving us the full brunt of the song’s lyrics. The storytelling is so fun and vibrant. You really just have to experience it for yourself. Stream it below, and tell us what you think of it on social media at: @gasmaskmagazine.
