The New Cancer: “Skinny Girls”

Attitude and a message, with the chops to back it up. Taking a page from the Emo/Alternative scene, The New Cancer’s meaningful, catchy tune “Skinny Girls” blends the heaviness of rock with a retro pop-rock vibe.

Written as a big ‘fuck you’ to people shaming women for not conforming to stranger’s ideas of perfect, I can say I’m here for it, all of it. The vocals are the audio equivalent of a shit-eating grin, sung with a growl and grit that prioritizes the lyrics, the message. With a force and tonality that never overpowers the words, letting itself be heard clearly, the vocal work is confident and competent. I thought it was a great move to include the chorus of women in the song chiding the incels pounding on their keyboards words of disapproval and mockery. You can’t change the minds of idiots, often they’ll wear the label proudly, but you can mock them. This rocking track is a great tool to remind yourself that other people’s opinions on your life, your body, really don’t amount to shit.
