Ugh, I’m in love. If “The 1975” and early “Hellogoodbye” had a baby it’d be the infinitely enjoyable The China Blue.
There is a throwback quality to this dreamy electro-bubble-pop track that just captured my imagination. Distorted VHS-quality video, cheesy grins, playful Dutch angles and the eternal indoor malls of the end of the century. Sly grins, nervous eyes, slow motion, montages of young love. It’s all there. The audio design here is what really shines through. The silky audio texture is so well layered that it lends complexity to this funky, fun sound. Seth Mykel Marques has a charming, lovely voice that he enhances effectively with his astute ear for sound design and music production.
The energy here is wonderful, bubbling and yet not clumsy or mindless, driven by the vocal stylings of Marques and the electronic cascade of sound. This amazing new audio experience will definitely be “Always on my mind.” Stream the track below, and be sure to tell us what you think on social media at: @gasmaskmagazine.
