Imagine, it’s the closing scene of a highly rated coming of age film, you’re the protagonist, and “A boy Named Johnny Gates” is playing in the background as credits begin to roll. That is the exact feeling I got when listening to the funky, pop/alternative song by NxTime, just pure joy.

I see myself listening to this song in any setting whether by myself, at a party, or on a road trip, and I’m sure many listeners will feel the same way. The song has a great bounce to it similar to alternative rock bands such as Vampire Weekend and SWMRS. But this song still has its unique style, having so many colors in their sound that paints this picture of freedom and youth. The band isn’t shy about playing around with sounds using hints of funk, claps, and even voices like a low octave “LA”. All being nice surprises for new listeners. Full of high spirited vocals and quirky lyrics, NxTime will capture new fans like myself with this one.

If you enjoy alternative rock, do yourself a favor and add “A Boy Named Johnny Gates” to your playlist. It’s a song that’s very hard not to fall in love with.
