Neon is such a striking word. It immediately conjures up images of narrow alleyways with seedy signs selling vices of various kinds. There’s something inviting about it as well, these striking colors in the darkness. Nolan Heights had this correlation in mind when creating the sultry, danceable pop single “Neon Lights.”
I think what I liked most about this song is the overall vibe. As I mentioned before, neon conjures up specific images, specific sensations in the mind, the memory. Nolan Height’s vocals transition from a smoky sigh to a strong, clear voice cutting through the haze. The backing mix is mystic, almost mysterious, never dropping out or fading. A lot like the steam that rises from subway grates, the music surrounds you, the beat very easy to get into. The lyrics speak of someone who deceives, who is enticing and treacherous all at once, a lot like the neon signs that beckon to illicit distractions.
