This song needs to get out of my head. I don’t just mean in the sense that it is incredibly repeatable and a sonic earworm, which it is. Neon Dreams’ latest release “Sick of Feeling Useless” jumps right out of my subconscious and says everything I’ve put off or been afraid of saying.
The Canadian group makes good use of their trademark genre blending. Drawing from a catchy pop chorus, a rock-heavy bridge and hip-hop’s rhythmic spoken word, the track plants itself in your head and doesn’t go away. The contemplative lyrics are really what hit us the hardest. There is a sense of looking outwards, or even back, trying to make sense of the world, of how it was, how it is.
The frustrated chorus, ‘sick of feeling useless’, is amazingly relatable. At a time when many of us are trapped with our thoughts, or even with our loved ones, that feeling of impotence creeps up and can be overbearing. Neon Dreams offers a way out of the slump, not through defeatism, but through acceptance, and the determination to move on, to do and be better. A hell of a lot to get out of a indie pop track, but that’s exactly what we’re feeling, and it’s anything but useless.
