Its rare that a song brings me to tears. Let me rephrase that; it is rare that a song has the lyrical, musical, and vocal power to bring me to tears. “Stay Alive” is tragically beautiful. The sorrow in Mustafa’s voice is palpable, but it is not defeatist, it is not forlorn. It is the sorrow that comes from a soul full of life and love, of hope, tempered by loss and being made to grow up fast, grow up soon, grow up hard.
The lyrics are transformative. Combining the bluntness of hard objects and sites with the powerful imagery of poeticism, the words become worlds all their own. I cannot overstate the heart wrenching effect of Mustafa’s voice. Sung in any other voice, this would be a flat feel-good song easily forgotten. But the emotion, the pain, the beautiful vocal ability heard in his performance, elevates, beautifies the song.
