I’m not a huge EDM fan, I’ll just come out and say that now. That having been obnoxiously said, I’ll add that I am an instant fan of Canadian Dance/EDM artist Matfroninja.
Often, I find artists in the Genre creating these pastiche audio car crashes with tempo shifts that leave me feeling unsatisfied. Matfroninja pays special attention to the totality of his music’s impression. The build here is unmistakable but instead of a hard drop that the rest of the song is lost in, it instead flows right into the chillingly beautiful vocals. The Vocal work here is never overpowered, drowned out by the mix, as it is an integral component, the real driving force. The mix is interesting as even when it hits the drop, it flares and bursts like the actual steady rhythm of a heart, multi-faceted and subtle, more than a thump or simple beat.
“Burn Down” isn’t the first EDM song I’ve heard, but thus far it’s the first I’ll remember. Matfroninja is definitely on my list of artists to work to see live once shows open back up and the road is a possibility.
