Kowloon: “Paradise”

Heavy retro vibes from this surprisingly poignant song by Kowloon. “Paradise” poses some surprisingly philosophic questions. Barely rising above a conversational tone and at times slipping into a conspiratorial whisper, the vocal work is very chill. Despite the title, the song is more a rhetorical exercise, circular statements which ask questions without answers.

This is a bold move, as more often than not people turn to music for distraction, for lighthearted noise. Presented in this way, contemplative without bogging down in heavy tones, the song uses serious thoughts in a sparse but effective manner.

I was thrown for a loop, but in a pleasant way, as I didn’t expect to have some welcome challenging ideas plopped into my head. Give this song a chance and see if you aren’t overthinking your existence as well. Stream it below, and tell us what you think of it on social media at: @gasmaskmagazine.
