Ever heard a song that just defied simple definition? Well, I have, and the unassumingly titled “One Day At A Time” from Jake Stopar is what has stumped me.
It’s a religious chant for the laid back, a psalm for the lackadaisical, an invocation for those of us overwhelmed and sprawled out on the couch. Never rising above more than a breathy whisper, Jake Stopar is charming. It’s like he’s confiding in you the secret to making it through this, whatever ‘this’ may be. The really unorthodox and endearing quality of the backing and instrumentals is that it’s so simple; a few guitar strums, some tappity-taps on a drum, and an amusing, muzak-esque keyboard.
While much of the music out there right now pushes you to climb, smash, explode, Jake Stopar squeezes your shoulder and, with a smile and a shrug, lets you in on the real secret to making it through tough times. “One Day At A Time” got us to sit back and take a deep breath, and hopefully, for you stressed, isolated people out there, it’ll have a calmative effect on your day too.
