I’ll be honest with you and say that I am flooded with Pop submissions and find it a bit hard to find meaningful differentiation. Samey beats, samey choruses, samey ‘millenial cry’ formula. Boardroom safe, boardroom boring.

Thankfully, Chantel Jeffries burst from my speakers and lit a fire in the pop kindling I thought so long depleted. I had fun listening to this track, I listened to it while I washed dishes, while I went for a hike, while I started a small fire, while I trashed my ex’s house. It just has that effect on you!

The lyrics are catchy, but they have a personal touch that I think often is lost in the genre. It’s short of platitudes, of saying this faceless person is perfect or immensely flawed. Instead it’s blunt, saying in one of my favorite musical lines of all time, “I liked the old you better.”Friend, that hits me hard, I mean see the above trashing of an ex’s private property. 

And don’t even get me started on her voice. With great range that alternates between sultry and playful, between teasing and matter-of-fact, what’s not to like? “Come Back To Me” is in the running for my favorite song of 2020, and I’m sure it will be for you as well. Stream it below, and tell us what you think of it on social media at: @gasmaskmagazine.
