Beat The System: “Sapphire”

This is the summer of singular female performances. I can feel it. I can feel it in my bones.

โ€˜Sapphireโ€™ is the latest release from Beat The System and it is a solid contender for one of my favorite songs of 2021.

A contemplative sound that doesnโ€™t rest on its laurels, allowing itself to be progressive in tempo while also dipping here and there for slow-burn builds that soar rather than drop. The mix, an interesting blend of pop-rock instrumentality and well-layered electronic production, is a standout composition that doesnโ€™t crowd out the brilliant vocal performance but has more weight to it than a simple support melody.

The lyrics speak of the exceptional emotion roused by this new relationship. Reinvigorating, reigniting the inner flame of love and romance that was kept low, nearly put out, by years of disappointment, of caution. While the doubts that these let-downs have sowed never really left, theyโ€™re pushed aside by the wave of new joy, passion, love, that has entered into their life.

The vocalist here has a plentiful reserve of resonant power to her voice, one that she flexes here and there. But really the contemplative tone struck early is what she keeps to, a consistency that really lets her more boisterous intonations really stand out and soar.
