If the title wasn’t a dead giveaway, Andy Macintyre has some choice words for the world and all the head-scratching and hand-wringing the world does over other people’s lives.
‘F*** Yourself’ is self-affirmation that goes beyond simple can-do-ism or Instagram-worthy inspirational posts over photos of exotic locales you’ll never see in person. It’s about being ready to take a harsh look at the world, and yourself, and be ready to give it all the finger and make your own path, find your own way, other people’s stares and opinions be damned.
The sound of the track is an interesting blend of Alt-Rock and Alt-Folk. It has an edge that is apparent in the overall vibe of the instrumentals and vocals, whereas traditional folk would put it in the lyrics, in the storytelling. And while that edge is without a doubt in the lyrics, in the storytelling, there’s a bit of a gruffer element to it as a whole that feels like a wide, shit-eating grin turned directly out to the audience. Subtlety isn’t a concern.
The message is direct. Well, there’s a bit of a double entendre in the title that comes full circle by the end of the track, but overall even that clever little bit of wordsmithing is still blatant and in your face. As it should be.
As far as the vocal performance here, that’s really where the whole Alternative/Alt-Folk perception comes into play. It’s gritty, carefree to the point of carelessness, with tousled, unwashed hair and the smell of several day’s worth of coffee and cigarettes on its breath. It’s all about the message, all about the lyrics, all about the music, baby.
Feeling stressed? Put this on and take the song’s advice, go ‘F*** Yourself’ today and go on a journey of self-discovery. Send pics.
