Contemporary R&B and soul singer C Williams gets hot and heavy on his debut track, “Lowkey.”
Silky smooth bass and drum patterns perfectly meld with Williams’s sultry, autotuned vocals. Seeing the word ‘sultry’ next to ‘autotune’ may cause some eyebrows to raise but believe us after listening to this song you might look at AI in a new light. Or you’ll just instantly fall in love with C Williams and that’s a completely valid option as well. Williams does use heavy autotune, but his breathy, soulful vocals definitely shine through on “Lowkey.”
While this track is thoroughly modern, we can’t help but notice the subtle 70’s flair lingering in melody’s bass line. And the synths layered on top definitely recall 90’s R&B grooves. Here at Gas Mask we love when artists play around with old school influences. And we especially love how Williams chose a more nuanced approach with this technique. “Lowkey” proves that C Williams is well on his way to Neo-soul stardom.
